Aloy's next adventures are on the way, with Guerilla Games confirming a sequel in development and some kind of multiplayer project spin-off.
“We have full confidence in our new leadership as they steer Guerrilla towards a bright future, expanding the world of Horizon with Aloy’s next adventure and our exciting online project,” -from the studio's announcement. This statement also references the former Guerilla co-head and founding member, Angie Smets, recently promoted to Head of Development Strategy at PlayStation Studios, and Hella Schmidt, a former managing director who worked at consulting firm Accenture, who is replacing Angie.
As Horizon Forbidden West ended mysteriously, its obvious a third entry is on the way to complete a Horizon trilogy. Until now however, it wasn't obvious if the next title was a first priority for the studio. But we now know the wait will not be terribly long. Guerilla continues to build the Horizon universe as they release spin-offs. A recent leak revealed a multiplayer game in development. Releases such as Call of the Mountain for the PS VR2, and don't forget the recent DLC, Burning Shores which arrived on April 19th, has kept the series seasoned with some content to tie fans over until the grand finale.
The Horizon series continues to be one of Sony's main interests and current flagships. Sony's studio acquisitions like the recent Firewalk Studios purchase last week, and recent promotions like Angie's, and prior, Herman Hulst's promotion to Head of PlayStation Studios in 2019, who was also a former Guerilla director, and even recent pushes toward live service, is just some of many signs of Sony's dedication to Horizon.
Though sales for Horizon haven't reached God of War levels around 11 million copies in mere months, there's a lot of firepower over at Sony these days- more than ever before.
