The 92nd Academy Awards is about to take place and The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have released their nominations.
Issa Rae and John Cho presented what the nominations were in a recent livestream.
Despite the many incredible and popular Japanese animated movies that have recently released, there were no nominations for a single one in the Animated Feature category, despite submissions for Weathering With You, Promare, Children of the Sea, and Okko's Inn all being submitted for the award.
The nominees are: Toy Story 4, Klaus, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, I Lost My Body, and Missing Link.
Shinkai Makoto's Weathering With You has made roughly $176 million worldwide, and was the first anime submission for Japan since Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Monoke in 1998 to be submitted in the Best International Featured Film category.
It doesn't seem abnormal that Japanese anime movies would get left out of these types of award shows on one hand.
Anime no matter what, as widespread and common as it and the fandoms surrounding anime exist all over the world- especially in the west today- is still seemingly viewed as a niche genre.
It seems to me like the Academy just doesn't understand that these immensely popular and successful films exist or are serious experiences in film worthy of these awards.
For crying out loud, even the titanic popularity of Kimi No Na Wa aka Your Name and its record of becoming a top grossing worldwide animation in film history wasn't enough.
On another note, Alita: Battle Angel, received no nomination whatsoever for the Visual Effects category but it did make the shortlist.
Instead the nominations are: The Irishman, Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker, The Lion King, Avengers: End Game, and 1917.
