Osaka's "Nipponbashi Den Den Town" holds a sacred otaku event each year at the start of March on a street that is in the midst of the most famous of otaku holy places in western Japan.
Besides Akihabara- the most infamous otaku holy land- Den Den Town has become famous not just for its otaku subculture found there, but the street festa that is has held for 14 years straight and counting.
Known as Nipponbashi Street Festa, this event's main street is open to one huge cosplay gathering with those participating coming from all reaches of the country.
Starting in 2005, Den Den Town started hosting the event with roughly 300 participants and over 100,000 attendees.
It has more than doubled attendance as of last year to an estimated 260,000, with roughly 10,000 cosplayers making it the largest cosplay event in the entire country of Japan. (That's almost double the attendance of San Diego Comic Con!!!)
Nipponbashi Street Festa features a cosplay parade with over 1,000 parade cosplayers and has become an event that has gained recognition worldwide. It takes a registration fee to enter into the famous parade, however everyone else is free to visit Den Den Town during the event, browse local shops, and enjoy various street performances and events that take place.
If you'd like to go, you can find the event at the front of the Emi Susumacho Subway Station which is part of the Sakaisuji Rail Line.
If you get off or are near Kintetsu Nanba Station, Namba Station, Nankai Namba Station I hear that it is only a 10 minute walk or so.
The JR Namba Station is a bit further away but can still be reached if you don't mind walking a little longer.
This post is the start of my work to connect with comrades in Japan to help bring RA:N more coverage of Japanese events and help those in the west gain another portal into the land of the rising sun.
This will be the first of a few Nipponbashi Street Festa 2019 galleries I plan to post here, with these cosplay photos in this post graciously supplied by comrade jtabn99 on Flickr.
Enjoy the gallery!
