The 2010 film Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha The MOVIE 1st is a retelling of the original 2004 Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha TV anime, presenting an alternate continuity. Similarly, the 2012 film Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha the Movie 2nd A's retells the 2005 sequel anime Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's.
Earlier this year, Discotek Media released the original 2004 TV anime on Blu-ray Disc on January 30. The story follows Nanoha Takamachi, an ordinary third grader whose life changes when she meets the mysterious ferret Yuuno and gains a magical device called Raising Heart. Her fate as a magical girl leads her into conflict with Fate Testarossa over the control of dangerous "Jewel Seeds" and the intervention of the Time-Space Administrative Bureau. Despite the battles, Nanoha's true desire is to become friends and use her magic for good.
In January 2020, the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha franchise announced a new project, though the format or medium was unspecified. Franchise creator and writer Masaki Tsuzuki later created the Extreme Hearts original anime, which premiered in July 2022 and was streamed by Crunchyroll.
The franchise began in 2004 with a 13-episode TV anime created by writer Masaki Tsuzuki, director Akiyuki Simbo, and studio Seven Arcs. It expanded with four more TV series, culminating in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ViVid in 2015 and the spinoff ViVid Strike! in 2016. In addition to the 2010 and 2012 movies, the franchise produced two more films, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Reflection (2017) and Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Detonation (2018), both released on Blu-ray Disc by Discotek Media in August and September 2023. The franchise also includes several manga, novels, and drama CDs.
