Guardians of the Azure Wardens, members of Azure Infinitum, and friends who stood beside us beneath the Traveler’s light, today I write this message with a heavy heart. Following Bungie’s recent announcements, layoffs, blog posts, and the confirmation that Destiny 2 is approaching its final stage with no future content currently planned or in development, I have made the difficult decision to officially retire from Destiny 2 and formally retire the Azure Wardens as an active Wing of Azure Infinitum.
While Bungie intends to keep the game online and release a final celebratory update in June featuring returning Sparrow Racing, Portal reorganizations, increased rewards, and a handful of quality-of-life updates, it has become clear through attendance numbers, community interest, and the overall state of the game that Destiny 2 is entering maintenance mode. Because of this, Azure Wardens event nights, clan operations, and official Wing activities will now come to an end.
Our in-game clan itself will remain open as long as the game remains online, and members are always welcome to continue using it to group up, revisit old memories, enjoy nostalgia runs, and adventure together casually. Over the coming weeks, Destiny 2 channels and pages across the Azure Network will gradually be dismantled and archived by the end of the month, while remaining discussion about the game can continue within our broader Games & Media spaces and VC Hangout channels.
Azure Wardens began its journey long ago during the original Destiny in 2015, during the Heavensward era of our FFXIV Free Company. What started as a small extension of Azure Infinitum grew into one of our greatest and most beloved branches. After Destiny 1’s final content cycle, we stepped away for a time, only to return stronger than ever during Destiny 2’s Shadowkeep era.
Over nearly twelve years spanning Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 alike, Azure Wardens stood proudly beside our Azure Hunters Clan in Monster Hunter, as one of the largest and most successful Wings in Azure history, second only to our illustrious FFXIV Free Company itself. Before the Resurgens Caeruleum Project reorganization of 2020 redefined our community structure into the modern “Wings of Azure,” the Wardens were already flying our banners proudly among the stars. In fact, Azure Wardens became the very first officially structured Wing to appoint Wing Commanders and Pathfinders under the Azure system, making it the first FPS franchise to ever formally carry the Azure Infinitum standard into another world. The Wardens helped pioneer the systems, traditions, leadership structures, and identity that many of our Wings still utilize today.
There are simply too many memories to recount fully. From wild “Iron Banana” Crucible nights and hilarious clan Gambit battles, to themed cosplay raids, D2 trivia nights in VC, Guardian Games competitions, Sparrow Racer events, Fish-Offs, nostalgic returns to Destiny 1, dungeon marathons, dev stream watch parties, and unforgettable first clears together, these years were filled with laughter, triumph, frustration, chaos, and friendship. We fought side-by-side through five expansions, through ups and downs in the game’s life cycle, and through eras where Destiny truly felt larger than life.
We competed against rival clans in good sport, welcomed countless Guardians into our ranks, and created memories that many communities never have the privilege to experience. Many gaming clans do not survive even a year. Azure Wardens endured for over a decade. That is something truly special. I consider the story of the Azure Wardens complete, and I am deeply proud of every Guardian who ever carried our crest into battle beneath the Azure banner.
Some have asked whether we would organize one final grand sendoff alongside June’s update. While I encourage everyone to continue playing together, enjoying the nostalgia, and using the clan while the servers remain online, I have ultimately decided not to host any final organized operations. Truthfully, the news came suddenly for me. Despite years of warnings from content creators and growing concerns from portions of the community, I still believed there was more life left in Destiny.
I did not expect things to end so abruptly, nor did I expect the story to seemingly halt mid-course in the way it has. The June update, while appreciated, largely consists of celebratory additions, drop increases, and maintenance-oriented changes rather than meaningful new adventures to rally behind as a community.
Because of that, it feels right to allow Azure Wardens to fade naturally into memory rather than force a final operation that does not truly reflect what made this Wing special. My own Guardian, after all these years, will quietly slip away into the stars as these final celebrations unfold, perhaps finally earning the peace she fought so long to protect for humanity and the Sol System alike.
Over the coming weeks and months, I will still share final recorded moments from our adventures together, old gameplay, funny memories, laughs between friends, and the many unforgettable moments captured during the final days of the Azure Wardens.
I imagine many of us are mourning not only the loss of a game, but the loss of familiar rituals and places that became part of our lives for over a decade. Visiting Xur every weekend. Standing together in the Tower. Picking up clan engrams. Comparing builds. Grinding intrinsics. Racing Sparrows. Preparing for raid nights. Listening to the music while waiting in orbit with friends late into the night. These are the kinds of moments that stay with people long after servers go quiet.
Yet even in sadness, there is something beautiful here too, we were fortunate enough to experience all of it together. Games come and go. Worlds rise and fade. But communities endure through the people within them, and Azure has always thrived where worlds are alive, evolving, and full of adventure.
To every Guardian who fought beneath the Azure name and banner, thank you. Thank you for your loyalty, your friendship, your laughter, your victories, your late-night chatter, your patience, and your passion over these many years.
The Azure Wardens carried our banners proudly through Destiny’s final chapters, and every strike completed, raid conquered, enemy felled, and memory forged in our name is an honor shared by all who wore the title of Azure Warden.
Though the Wing now retires, its legacy will forever remain part of Azure Infinitum’s history. And perhaps someday, years from now, if the stars align and Destiny rises again in some new form, Azure Infinitum may once more fly among the stars together. Until then, may your journeys ahead be filled with adventure, friendship, and new worlds to explore.
