Japan’s beloved tokusatsu franchise, Super Sentai, is reportedly drawing the curtain on its storied run. Media outlets are reporting that the current series, No. 1 Sentai Gozyuger (which premiered in February 2025), will serve as the final chapter of the Super Sentai brand- marking the end of a legacy that began in 1975 with Himitsu Sentai Gorenger.
The reported reason behind this monumental decision is financial. According to sources close to production, rising production costs combined with declining returns from merchandise, live events, and film tie-ins made sustaining the franchise under its current format increasingly untenable. Despite these claims, the major stakeholders - including broadcaster TV Asahi and producer Toei Company - have not yet confirmed the end of the series, leaving fans in a mix of shock and uncertainty.
If the reports are true, this would mark the end of one of Japan’s most enduring children’s programming blocks and a foundational source of the tokusatsu genre. For decades, Super Sentai offered weekly colour-coded hero teams, giant robot battles, transformation sequences and spawned an entire global phenomenon through its western adaptation, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
I discovered Power Rangers in the mid 90's and really loved them, collected the toys, and wanted to be the White Ranger for Halloween.
Going forward, what remains unclear is whether the franchise will fully end, rebrand, or continue under a new format. Fans are closely watching for official announcements.
